Seek the Truth

Which pill do you want? Do you want the truth or do you want the illusion?
This reference comes from the movie "The Matrix" ( first one ) which I recommend if you have yet to discover it. There is a profound analogy which can be made to our current situation.
We are living in a spell. This spell may be stressful and frightening at times, but the truth is much more uncomfortable and frightening.
Today I had a discussion with an intelligent and reasonably aware computer programmer about 9-11. He said that he believed it was done by 19 Arab terrorists and that "nothing I could say would change his mind." He agreed that the official story put out by the government was false. How he could reconcile these two beliefs in his mind was unclear to me. What was clear was that he wanted to stay in the spell and that he was willing to ridicule me for even questioning it.
I've run into this response numerous times. I've come to the conclusion that we need to have mental preparation for the truth. We've been mentally conditioned to think in particular ways which are incompatible with a correct rendering of the truth.
Many years ago there was a practice of "standing corrected." Someone who was found to have said something incorrect would say "I stand corrected" which meant that they admitted they had an incorrect perception of the truth and that they have now adapted and accepted the correct understanding.
We seem to have lost this practice. Very few people "stand corrected" nowadays. Most of the people I meet are dedicated to defending their erroneous perceptions of truth.
When I came upon the evidence of 9-11 and started to think about it I "stood corrected" and changed my view of the events of that horrible day. The truth, as I now understand it,is far worse than the story we were told about 19 Arab terrorists. The truth is that our own government was complicit in the events of the day, quite possibly engineering and executing the entire sordid series of events. One thing was extremely clear to me: we have stopped looking for the truth of 9-11. The investigation is finished.
The investigation done by the 9-11 commission was faulty in so many ways. But we seem to want to "get past it" and ignore the truth of what happened on that infamous day when the "greatest crime in American history" happened. We want to forget about it without an honest and earnest search for the truth. This is evil. Righteousness requires us to continuously seek the truth .... always searching for more truth because there is always more truth to be discovered.
It all comes back to the truth. The NeoCons ( Neofascists in my mind ) have an understanding of how our mind works better than most of us have in our own reckoning. They understand how to "create truth out of fiction" and they understand that most people would rather have a "scary spell" than a "horrendous truth." Most of us simply want to get on with our lives as if nothing happened. "Go shopping!" George Bush said. That captures the essence of our mental structure. We want to buy the truth. We want the vain pleasure of thinking that we can "make it so" by our collective belief in a simple story.
There is one attribute of the truth which is clear: it stays the same. The correct truth persists regardless of whether we pay attention to it or ignore it. The correct truth is transcendent to our vain attempts to craft it with our desires and beliefs.
There has been a lot of time and energy spent to convince us that "truth is a matter of opinion." This is true, ironically, but the concept of a "correct truth" is lost. Truth is a many splendored things and one facet of truth is opinion. But having an opinion is different than being correct.
Something hit the Pentagon on 9-11. It may have been an airplane or it may have been a missile. But it is one or the other. There is a correct opinion, regardless of whether I know which is correct. There was one kind of mechanical flying machine which hit the Pentagon. There is a correct truth.
That's a good starting spot when searching for the truth. We should seek to find the correct truth, rather than a "consensus opinion" which may be incorrect. Let's remember that for much of human history it was considered true that the Earth was the center of the universe. But it was not a correct truth. It was an incorrect opinion.
So how do we know the truth? It persists. It corresponds to the facts of our existence. It combines with other truths to create greater understanding of our world. Truth takes you somewhere. That's how you know it's true. It opens up more truth.
But many of us have closed down to the truth. I hear people saying "just let me live in my spell" rather than "I want to wake up to the truth." This is the core of the issue. Do you WANT to know the truth? Are you earnestly seeking the truth? Or have you surrendered to the spell?
Desire releases power. If you want something you will acquire the power needed to achieve it. This applies to whether you want money, love, or truth. Desire it and you will be empowered to receive it.
Truth is often hard to accept. The spell is easy to accept. Life is easier in the spell. Are you willing to work for the truth? Are you willing to desire it with all of your being? Are you willing to follow up this desire with actions in the physical world?
Do you want the red pill or the blue pill? Desire to wake up to the truth. Desire a correct understanding. Be willing to be wrong in your opinions. In the words of Jesus: "Seek the truth and the truth will set you free."
