U.S. Is Better than Estonia
Greg Anrig, Jr - The Century Foundation.
Jody Heymann, of Harvard's Work, Family and Democracy Initiative, wrote a book a few years ago called The Widening Gap: Why America's Working Families are in Jeopardy—and What Can Be Done About It. The book demonstrates how middle-income couples have joined low-income parents in confronting constraints in raising their kids.
Heymann's Project on Global Working Families produced a report asking where the U.S. ranks relative to other countries with respect to various policies that would help parents to manage work-family challenges. Needless to say, we stink. For example, the U.S. is third from the bottom—ahead of only Colombia and Estonia—in the duration of parental leave (paid and unpaid) provided per two parent family after babies are born. Thirty-seven countries—but not the U.S.—have policies guaranteeing parents some type of paid leave when their children are ill.
Editor's Note...Have you noticed all the new packaged food products designed to be prepared by kids alone that are now being marketed by the food processing industry? Ever exploitive American big business is profiting from the social ills that it itself has created.
